Porcelain Figurine

National Socialism linked the body and sport to national identity and racial categories through values of fitness, health and beauty. Only those labeled as “Aryan” could now reach perfection. This porcelain figurine, which was produced in Germany during the 1930s, reflects some of these ideals. When it came to women, German sports imagery from the era typically portrayed idealized Aryan females performing “feminine” sports, such as gymnastics, figure skating or diving. Outside of professional sports, women were encouraged to take care of their bodies: athletics primed women for their designated role in society as mothers helping to build a fortified German “Volk,” or people.
