City of Vancouver Proclaims Ruth Kron Sigal Day
April 7, 2025
Ruth Kron Sigal, who passed away in December 2008, was a dedicated survivor speaker with the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre (VHEC). Her resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship continues to inspire future generations.
Born into a Jewish family in Lithuania in 1936, Ruth endured the horrors of hiding from the Nazis, losing her grandmother in a bomb blast, and being forced into the Siauliai ghetto, where her surviving family members faced immense suffering.
Rith devoted her life to sharing her story, fostering understanding, and ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust continue to resonate across generations. After immigrating to Canada, she became a cherished voice of remembrance through her work with the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre, where she spent years sharing her testimony with students and community members.
“This proclamation is a profound recognition of Ruth’s lifelong commitment to remembrance and education,” said Hannah Marazzi, Acting Executive Director of the VHEC. “Her resilience and dedication have left an indelible mark on our community, inspiring countless individuals to stand against antisemitism and injustice.”
The proclamation ensures that Ruth’s legacy—one of courage, remembrance, and the pursuit of human rights—will continue to inspire for generations to come. The date also marks the 10th anniversary of Ruta’s Closet, Ruth’s memoir—originally published as a VHEC fundraiser and now set for global release as part of a broader Holocaust education campaign.
