A Discussion with Simon Kuper
Join us online as we host a discussion with journalist, Simon Kuper, about Holocaust history and the global impact of football.
This program explores the fascinating intersection of football, history, and social identity with leading Financial Times columnist and author Simon Kuper. In conversation with University of the Fraser Valley professor Dr. Sebastian Huebel, Kuper will bridge the gap between his seminal works like Ajax, The Dutch, The War: Football in Europe During the Second World War (2003) and World Cup Fever: A Footballing Journey in Nine Tournaments (2026) exploring the power of football and sport in both historical and contemporary societies.

Speakers
Simon Kuper
Simon Kuper is a leading columnist and speaker on urban life, globalisation, Europe and football. He has been writing for the Financial Times for nearly 30 years. His column in the weekend magazine has won multiple awards and is read by tens of thousands of people around the world. Although he is now best known for his analyses of modern life, from the future of offices to Brexit, Simon is also well-known for his insights into sport.
Simon is the author of numerous books: “Barca”, written with inside access to FC Barcelona, was published in 2021, and won the Sunday Times award for Football Book of the Year. His bestselling “Chums: How a Tiny Caste of Oxford Tories Took Over the UK”, appeared in 2022. His memoir of modern Paris, Impossible City, is published in April 2024, in time for the Olympics. His new football podcast, Heroes & Humans, launched in March 2024. As well as being a prolific writer, Simon often appears on television as a sport and cultural commentator.

Sebastian Huebel
Sebastian Huebel, PhD is an Assistant Professor in Modern European History at the University of the Fraser Valley. He specializes in the history of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. His first book is titled Fighter, Worker and Family Man: German Jewish Masculinities in Nazi Germany. He has further published articles in the journals Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Jewish Culture and History and a few others. Born and raised in Germany, Sebastian is a passionate soccer fan.
