PRIVACY POLICY

MISSION

Through education and remembrance, the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre (“VHEC”) engages students, educators and the broader public in British Columbia and beyond with the history of the Holocaust – the Shoah – and its ongoing relevance. As a teaching museum that stewards programs and collections initiated by Holocaust survivors, we honour and support those who survived and remember those who perished.

PURPOSE OF PRIVACY POLICY

The VHEC values its relationships with Holocaust survivors and their families, its members, patrons, volunteers, donors, educators and visitors to its museum located at 950 West 41st Avenue, Vancouver, BC and to its website. The VHEC acknowledges the trust of those with whom it deals and is committed to respecting and protecting their personal information. It recognizes that maintaining this trust requires transparency and accountability in its collection and treatment of personal information entrusted to it.

PRIVACY POLICY

The VHEC is committed to complying with the Personal Information Protection Act (“PIPA”) of British Columbia.

This Privacy Policy is a statement of the principles and guidelines that the VHEC applies to the collection, use, protection and disclosure of personal information.

The Privacy Policy is posted at the VHEC website and may be amended at its discretion from time to time and without notice by posting such changes on the VHEC website, www.vhec.org (the “Website”). Any such change will be effective immediately upon posting.

WHAT IS PERSONAL INFORMATION?

PIPA defines “Personal Information” as information about an identifiable individual and includes employee personal information but does not include contact information or work product information.

WHAT PERSONAL INFORMATION DOES THE VHEC COLLECT?

The VHEC collects the following Personal Information from you:

• Your name;
• Address, including email address;
• Occupation, if you provide it;
• Internet Protocol (“IP”) address; and
• Your browsing activity on the Website.

HOW THE VHEC COLLECTS PERSONAL INFORMATION

Generally, the Personal Information is collected directly from you when you visit our Website, make a donation or request information either by filling in an online or paper application form, in person as well as indirectly, from public sources and your ongoing interactions with us.

The VHEC also automatically receives and records information on its computer server logs, which information may include your computer’s IP address and “cookie” information. A cookie is a small text file that is stored on your computer that contains information about your use of the Website. Disabling cookies may limit your usability on certain portions of the Website.

HOW THE VHEC USES PERSONAL INFORMATION

The VHEC uses Personal Information to communicate with you, to deliver products and services you may have requested, and to provide information about additional activities, programs, events and services that we believe might be of interest to you. For example, the VHEC uses your Personal Information to:

• verify your identity;
• send out membership information to our members;
• maintain donor lists;
• maintain educator lists;
• fundraise;
• provide research and educational services;
• collect testimonies;
• maintain and grow the VHEC archival, library and museum collections;
• process your donations;
• if requested by you, notify recipients when you make a donation in their honor;
• send you and the recipients of donations made in their honour updates on the activities, programs events and services of the VHEC; and
• use technical information logged by our servers when you visit our Website to improve the experience on the Website including by anonymizing the information for statistical, educational purposes and, in our discretion, sharing of the anonymized results with our affiliates and academics researchers.

MAKING A DONATION

When you make an online donation through the Website or by communicating directly with us, we collect personal data such as your name, billing address, email address and your donation including the amount of your donation. We also collect but do not retain credit card numbers which are processed by a third-party payment vendor subject to Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards. If you use PayPal, Apple Pay or other similar services, their use of your information is solely based on the terms of services and policies you have agreed to with them. You are encouraged to review those policies.

If you make a donation in honour or in memory of another party, the name and address of such other party and any personal message you may have created to the recipient is stored on our servers.

WHAT THE VHEC DOES NOT DO WITH YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

The VHEC does not sell, lease, grant access to, or disclose your Personal Information or provide membership, donor, volunteer or visitor lists to any other party, except as described above, as required by law or with your consent.

HOW THE VHEC PROTECTS YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

Having regard to the sensitivity and the importance of your Personal Information, the VHEC maintains security standards to ensure that all Personal Information is protected against unauthorized access or disclosure. To that end, the VHEC undertakes regular reviews and upgrades to secure the Personal Information collected.

WEBSITE LINKS

Our Website may from time to time contain links to other sites of interest. In such cases, even though the link is embedded on the Website, the VHEC is not responsible for the privacy practices of such other sites. If you provide Personal Information at one of those sites, we encourage you to read the privacy policy of such websites operated by third parties. This Privacy Policy applies solely to information collected by the VHEC.

YOUR RIGHT TO ACCESS YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

You have the right upon written request to access your Personal Information collected by the VHEC. This right of access is subject to certain exceptions such as where such disclosure may result in disclosure of Personal Information about another individual, the Personal Information is subject to solicitor/client or other legal privilege, or where the Personal Information was collected for the purpose of a legal investigation.

CONSENT

By continuing to access our Website you are deemed to consent to the use, collection and disclosure of Personal Information as described in this Privacy Policy. Explicit consent is not requested where such is authorized or required according to PIPA.

You may request, by notice in writing including by email at any time, to not receive any communications from the VHEC or to delete or restrict use of your Personal Information.
