By the end of World War II, six million Jews had been erased from the world. Those who survived often lost their homes, families and entire way of life. In response, they drew on a long tradition of self-narration, gathering in groups to write yizkor books—memorial volumes that remembered everything that had been destroyed. Once There Was a Town takes readers on a journey through this largely uncharted body of writing and the vanished world it preserves
